I find I get to a point of collapsing the whole push up if I try to go too close to "chest to deck" ie I cant push back up from the floor. But each time I do push ups,I try to get that little bit closer then stop and push back up just before I get that "collapse" feeling. Maybe I just need more strength in the shoulders to push away from the floor quicker and/or stronger abs.

Our house is full of "ow my legs" todat that really was a killer.

Sounds about right, more strength in the chest and triceps - a good way to achieve this is full range with an elevated hand position.
